Plane crashes into icy waters of Hudson River, two rescued

New York: A small plane crashed into the Hudson River at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 27, 2013.

According to NJ.com, two people aboard the single-engine Piper PA-32 were rescued from the plane shortly after the crash.

The plane took off from the Robbinsville airport and crashed into the Hudson River near Yonkers, NY shortly after take off. Trenton Robbinsville Airport in Trenton, N.J.

Kathleen Bergen, a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration, tells NJ.com that first responders pulled man and a woman out of the icy waters and treated them for hypothermia.

The crash victims were reportedly wearing life vests and were in the water approximately 20 to 30 minutes before they were rescued.

Bergen confirms that the plane was flying under “visual flight rules" on Sunday. That term means that the plane was receiving no assistance from air traffic controllers.

Still unnamed, the victims were both in their 30s and were taken to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx and are currently listed in stable condition.

Another plane that crashed into the Hudson made headlines in January 2009 when Captain Chesley B. “Sully” Sullenberger III guided US Airways Flight 1549 to an emergency water landing in New York City's frigid Hudson River.
