New Delhi: Dr Sudhir Krishna, IAS, Secretary (UD), inaugurated in-situ Construction & Demolition (C&D) Waste Recycling Plant, installed by NBCC at its Project Site of Redevelopment of East Kidwai Nagar, New Delhi, on May 3, 2013. S/Shri Sanjay Kumar Srivastava, IAS, Chief Secretary, Govt. of NCT Delhi; Jalaj Shrivastava, IAS, Chairman, NDMC; Dr Anoop Kumar Mittal, CMD, Directors, NBCC and other distinguished guests were also present on the occasion.
Construction & Demolition (C&D) Waste, is a real troubling hazard for Indian cities, since it is a common practice for large construction projects to pile waste on the road and elsewhere around, due to non availability of space. This practice often results in traffic congestion and many other related hassles including environmental issues. The gravity of the hazard can be easily gauged from the fact that out of 48 million tonnes of solid waste generated in India, C&D Waste makes up 25% annually. Furthermore, the total quantum of waste from the construction is estimated to be between 12 million to 14.7 million tonnes per annum out of which 7.28 million tonnes are concrete and brick waste.
Mitigation of such hazards arising out of C&D Waste has, of late, become priority for the government and NBCC, under the guidance and co-operation of its Ministry, the Ministry of Urban Development, took this significant initiative of recycling of huge volume of C&D Waste in its recently awarded mega project of Redevelopment of East Kidwai Nagar, New Delhi by setting up this C&D Waste Recycling Plant in the project, commissioning it with a mandate of ZERO Waste. The installation of the plant would benefit the project in many ways such as cent percent saving in transportation cost of C&D waste material, reducing the Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) in the environment thereby reducing the health hazard. Further, the recycling of C&D waste material would help in reducing the material required for the project and getting rid off the requirement of space to dump the waste at other locations.
It is also to mention that the capacity of this newly set up Recycling Plant of NBCC is 150 tonn per day to process the C&D Waste which in turn, shall produce 30,000 bricks/kerb stone and shall be used in the construction of the project which involves demolition of 2444 units and construction of 60,00,000 lac sqft. built up residential area and 12,00,000 sqft. commercial area. This significant step taken by NBCC for the project, would also help maximizing reuse of recoverable materials in construction activity and minimizing waste quantity that requires land fill disposal.
NBCC which is executing this project on PPP model shall ensure 100% buy back of the finished product comprising bricks, tiles etc. after the treatment of the waste in the recycling plant. With the success of this initiative, NBCC also plans to follow these best practices in all its future Redevelopment Projects as well as Mega Projects.
