Gen VK Singh issued retirement note New Delhi: The army has issued the retirement note to General VK Singh saying that his tenure ends on May 31,2012. The army has taken the final decision on issuing official communication of his retirement after Gen Singh withdrew from the Supreme Court his petition over the age controversy.

According to official sources, the Military Secretary branch of the army has given the Retirement Warning Letter (RWL) to Gen Singh to get his pension papers ready. And officials believe that with this official communication to Gen Singh, the ministry of defence (MoD) will son make announcement of his successor.

The MoD has short-listed three senior most officers — Eastern Army Commander Lt Gen Bikram Singh, Vice Chief of Army Lt Gen Shri Krishna Singh and Northern Army Commander Lt Gen KT Parnaik — for the top post. Lt Gen Bikram Singh is considered to be the front runner for the top post because of his seniority amongst the short-listed candidates.

According to an army official,RWL is normally given to an officer about 10-11 months prior to his/her due date of retirement but in case of General Singh, it was not issued as he had filed official pleas to get his date of birth changed.
