Girls on Top: Team USA ranks 1 with 46 Olympic gold medal, and 29 were from the women London: The United States has won the Olympics, and we have the girls to thank. America is celebrating a spectacular victory over rival China, winning a whopping 46 golds, 29 silver and 29 bronze.

Whether in the swimming pool, on the running track or in the gymnastic studio, the U.S. women obliterated their competition to contribute 29 of our 46 gold medals.

The People's Republic of China took home 38 golds, 27 silver and 22 bronze, totaling 87 medals, while hosts Great Britain did themselves proud, scoring third place with 29 gold, 17 silver and 19 bronze.

The U.S. had carved out an unbeatable lead over China last Friday - days before the London summer games officially came to a close.

When sprinter Allyson Felix and teammates set a world record in the 4x100 relay on Friday night America had its 41st gold medal and victory was theirs. But it wasn't just the track and field females blitzing rivals.

Swimmer Missy Franklin won two individual golds and helped teammates secure first place in the women's team event.

'Flying squirrel' Gabby Douglas contributed an individual gold to the tally as did teammate Aly Raisman, and the pair helped Team U.S.A. win the gold for the group event.

Felix took home an individual gold as well as the relay win and Serena and Venus Williams contributed two golds to help America get to the top of the leaderboard.

Yesterday, the U.S. women's basketball team took down France to secure their fifth consecutive Olympic win.

But of course, the world's greatest Olympian Michael Phelps did his fair share to help America secure the impressive victory, while fellow swimmer Ryan Lochte also contributed to the tally.

Today, on the last day of the games, the boys contributed another two golds with the men's basketball team overcoming Spain and Jake Varner won the men's 96-kilogram freestyle wrestling.

Ranking countries by gold medals and total medals, the U.S. came out on top. The country is indisputably the world champion of sports.

'We came to the Olympics with very specific medals projections, and with the idea of beating China,' a U.S. Olympic Committee official said this week, according to The Daily News.

'Given their system, that hasn’t been easy.'

The Chinese led in July but fell back in August, failing to meet medal expectations in table tennis and diving events.

Meanwhile, the Americans, particularly the women, outperformed in team sports and track and field.

This is the fifth straight time the U.S. has won the Olympics in total medals. But the Chinese thrashed America in gold at the Beijing Olympics 51-36.
