Washington: A member of the Kennedy clan was last night returned to Washington as Joseph Kennedy III won his bid for a congressional seat in Massachusets.
At least one Kennedy relative has served in the House, Senate or White House for 64 years until the last Congressman retired in 2011.
According to the Daily Mail report, Joseph, 32, has plenty of direct connections to the political sphere as he is the son of former Representative Joseph Kennedy II and the grandson of former senator Robert F. Kennedy.
Robert 'Bobby' Kennedy was one of the most famous members of the political family as he was his brother former President John F. Kennedy's attorney general and went on to run for President in his own right but was shot dead during a campaign event.
The family's long streak was only broken last year when Patrick Kennedy, who was a congressman for Rhode Island, retired from his post.
Joe Kennedy's win tonight maintains both his family's and the district's long-term Democratic control.
The Boston Globe called the race in his favor after only 28 per cent of the vote had been counted in the state's fourth district which is up for grabs in the wake of famed Democrat Barney Frank's retirement.
Barney Frank represented the Massachusetts 4th district which includes much of the south coast of the state since 1981, making him the longest-serving openly gay member of Congress.
In his most recent term, Frank was one of the leading co-sponsors of the controversial financial regulation mandate, the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.
Kennedy beat Republican Sean Bielat, making this Bielat’s second time being defeated in the fight for the spot as he challenged Frank in 2010.
This is Joe Kennedy’s first foray into politics, having graduated from Harvard Law School in 2009 and spending his time since then in various Massachusetts district attorney offices.
