Pentagon confirms death of ISIS leader Abu Muhammad al-Adnani New Delhi: ISIS news today confirms the death of Islamic State (ISIS) leader, Abu Muhammad al-Adnani in northern Syria last month. This is based on confirmation from the Pentagon on Monday.

Al-Adnani served as the spokesman and face of the extremist movement. He also encouraged all Muslims to kill non-Muslims.

The press secretary of the Pentagon, Peter Cook, said that the airstrike near Al Bab in Syria served to remove the head propagandist, recruiter and engineer of external terrorist operations of ISIS from the battlefield.

He continued to say that the recent airstrike was one in a series of successful strikes against the ISIS leaders which included those responsible for military and financial planning. Striking the heads of the ISIS group would ultimately incapacitate the group’s function.

The airstrike made on August 30 was by a predator drone which shot a Hellfire missile at the car in which the deceased terrorist leader was travelling in.

French Intelligence officials had reported that Adnani played a big role in most of the group’s most high-profile attacks over the past 12 months including in Paris, a café in Bangladesh, Istanbul and Brussels’ airports. He was also involved in the downing of a Russian airliner as a result of suicide bombings.

Peter Cook had previously said in a statement that Adnani had been coordinating the movement of fighters in Islamic State which encouraged lone wolf attacks on members of the military, and actively recruited new ISIS members including civilians.

Russia had initially stated that they were responsible for his death soon after the strike which was dismissed as a joke by Pentagon officials.

The ISIS news today is a huge blow to the jihadists. ISIS has been losing a lot of its territory this year alongside a few of its senior leaders. The group also confirmed that their key military figure Omar al-Shishani had been killed.

Earlier this month, the Pentagon had further stated that the leader of the group’s affiliate had also died in a similar airstrike.
