Sahitya Akadami tribute to Surjit Patar with condolence message

New Delhi: Distinguished Punjabi poet, writer, translator and educationist Surjit Patar passed away on 11 May 2024. During his 79 years of life, through his writings, he gave prestige to Punjabi language and literature in the country and abroad. His first poetry collection was 'Collage' and his first ghazal collection was published in 1978 under the name 'Hawa Vich Likhe Haraf'. More than 10 books of his poetry and prose have been published. He adapted eight world famous poetry-dramas into Punjabi. He did 30 episodes of the poetry serial on the history of poetry under 'Suraj da Sanmana' on Doordarshan. For this he also researched, wrote and presented. He had been Professor of Punjabi at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana.
Padma Shri awardee Surjit Patar was the Chairman of Punjabi Sahit Academy, Ludhiana and Punjab Arts Council, Chandigarh. Decorated with many prestigious awards and honors, Surjit Patar was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in the year 1993 for the poetry collection 'Hanere Vich Sulgadi Varnmala'.
The literary world is saddened by the demise of Surjit Patar and his demise is an irreparable loss not only to Punjabi but to the entire Indian literature. Sahitya Akademi family offers its humble tribute to the departed soul.
